Description:

The World of Mendelssohn with Hervé Nichet and WispelwayThe world of Mendelssohn with Hervé Nichet and Wispelway. At the age of 20, Mendelssohn performed Bach's "Matthew Passion" for the first time since his death. Throughout his life, Bach was an important composer to Mendelssohn. In this album, Mendelssohn combines religious vocal works that show various influences of Bach and his predecessors with chamber works that incorporate chorales, which were also used by Bach. The motet is performed by the prestigious Flanders Radio Choir led by Nike, and the chamber music is performed by Whisperway's friends, the Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto and the Scottish pianist Alasdair Beatson. All of the religious works recorded here are for unaccompanied chorus, and their beautiful harmony and superb calligraphy create a world with a sense of transparency. Psalm 2, "Why do the nations make merry," op. 78-1, is a work for double chorus, written as music for a series of Christmas services. It is a beautiful work that is the result of Mendelssohn's study of the works of his predecessors, including the dotted rhythms that express joy, a Baroque idiom. The Piano Trio No. 2 was written at the same time that Mendelssohn completed the Violin Concerto, and at the same time that he was working on his oratorio "Elia". The last movement of this masterpiece features the chorale melody that Bach also used in Cantata No. 130 (Cantata for the Feast of St. Michael). The Adagio from Cello Sonata No. 2, recorded at the end of the disc, is also a beautiful piece that begins with the harmonic progression of the alto aria from Bach's John Passion, "It is done! The entire album can be said to be a tribute to Bach. King International
