His performance of the Ninth with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in December 2023 attracted a great deal of attention, and in April 2024 he became the principal guest conductor of the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra. The complete Schubert symphonies that he has conducted with the Hague Residential Orchestra will finally be released as a set. De Friend was the principal conductor of the orchestra from 2015 to 2019.Recording began in June 2016 and was completed in July 2022 after the Corona Disaster. De Friend has established an international reputation as music director of the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam, which he founded in 1982. He has applied period technique to modern instruments and has performed a vast repertoire of 18th century works. Having developed his own style through the ages, de Friend has been invited to perform with orchestras around the world. The Schubert recordings that resulted from the good relationship between the two orchestras are a rewarding experience, with the full, soft tones of the string groups adding a powerful intensity to the performance. The recording is a beautiful Schubert performance, as is typical of de Friendo, who sings the melody with grace and elegance. This is a new masterpiece of the complete Schubert symphonies.
