A prestigious group of old music ensemble, which has been delighting connoisseurs with its authentic and high-level performances of viols and lutes that flutter in perpetual motion, takes on Dowland's sublime lament, a lifetime masterpiece! The famous Italian ensemble "Accademia Strumentale Italiana" performs with a flexible composition mainly consisting of viols. Following Bach's "Technique de fugue" (CC-72842/KKC-6275) and Rameau's "Concerte" (CC-72905/KKC-6507), the third release on the Challenge label is Dowland's masterpiece "Lacryme"! The group has always delivered high-level classical music performances that transcend the stereotypes of "national" music in both Germany and France, and their latest release is another must-see. Dowland was the court luthier to King Christian IV of Denmark from 1598 to 1606. Lacryme, or Seven Tears" was published during his one-year stay in London from 1603, and is dedicated to Christian IV's sister Anne. It is an unusual composition for five viols and lute, and the only viol ensemble in Dowland's published works.The score is printed with each part facing in a different direction, so that six players can play in a circle around a single sheet of music placed in the center of the table. This determines the order of the instruments and gives form to the communication between the players, which is an interesting aspect of the piece. The dialogue between the viol ensemble and the lute, which is decorative and dynamic, is beautiful and evocative of eternity, yet at the same time stimulating and innovative.
