A Soul-Stirring Cantata Depicting the Agony of Love The chamber cantata, which flourished in Italy in the early 18th century, is a relatively short musical form consisting of a recitative and several arias. Written for a simple ensemble of voices and basso continuo, it was performed in private settings among the nobility. The Venetian composer Benedetto Marcello (1686–1737) was one of the most prolific composers in this genre, having composed approximately 300 cantatas between 1710 and 1720. Of these, more than 20 were cantatas for bass. These works, which sought a perfect harmony between poetry and music, are said to have influenced later great composers such as Rossini, Bizet, Verdi, and Chopin; Verdi, in particular, held Marcello’s recitatives in high regard. Complex emotions—such as rejection, sorrow, jealousy, hope, and lament—are expressed through singing supported by superb vocal writing and vivid harmonies.
