Rediscovering the Letzball: A Free and Innovative Work of Entertainment Aumann, the Little-Known Composer Active in St. Florian The Letzball, which actively introduces little-known Baroque music, presents another noteworthy production. Franz Joseph Aumann was born in 1728 in Traismauer, Austria. He studied music in Vienna, where he met some of the era’s leading musicians. He moved to St. Florian in 1753, was ordained a priest a few years later, and served at the monastery until his death in 1797. His surviving works are by no means numerous, and his chamber music is particularly rare. These are sophisticated works of entertainment composed as occasional music, featuring pairs of violins and violas engaging in lively, equal dialogue, while trumpets (clarinos) and timpani heighten the heroic and sacred atmosphere, and while the brilliant recorder (flute) takes a concertante role; the use of instruments is innovative and free. The music is brimming with a joy reminiscent of Haydn. The occasional use of folk-inspired melodies also lends depth to the music. The vocal works based on texts by Maurus Lindemeyer—who wrote many plays in Austrian dialects—are also humorous.
