Debussy (1862-1918)

Description:

Debussy and Ravel, painting and literature in contrast. Debussy's "The Sea" is music in three movements, "From Dawn to Midday at Sea," "The Play of the Waves," and "Dialogue between Wind and Sea," and is entitled "Three Symphonic Drawings for Orchestra. Intuitively, it depicts the sea as if it were a painting, avoiding traditional expressions such as "symphony" or "symphonic poem. The composer's message seems to be that music does no more than give an impression. On the other hand, Ravel's "Ma mer Roi" is a narrative music based on Mother Goose. Originally written as a four-hand piano piece for children, Ravel arranged it for orchestral music himself, and his work contrasts sharply with Debussy's in that he uses the orchestral palette to elaborately redraw already existing musical ideas. Conductor Antonello Manacorda is one of the founding members of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, a former violinist who served as concertmaster for eight years; as of 2017 he is active as a conductor. With the Arnhem Philharmonic, he has released Mahler's Symphony No. 4 (CC-72659) and other works on CHALLENGECLASSICS. King International
