This is "cool" contemporary music! A dynamic orchestral feast. Three recent works by Robin de Raaf (1968-), a leading Dutch orchestral composer. All of them are full of exquisite and daring orchestration, and are full of exciting and poignant music. The Cello Concerto and Symphony No. 3 are both world premiere live recordings. The quality of the conductors, including Nézet-Séguin, is also noteworthy. The Cello Concerto is a cool piece with a powerful solo cello that leads the music forward. The high level of enthusiasm of the percussion instruments, including brass and piano, is also appealing. Entangled Tales" was written for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and later became the second movement of the First Symphony. The piece is a multi-faceted variation of small cells, layered and repeated, with brilliant instrumentation reminiscent of the Impressionist and Expressionist eras. Symphony No. 3 was written to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Arnhem Philharmonic.Illumination.... Eclipse (Illumination....
