Aida-Carmen Soanea, a student of Schoenberg's Hannenheim, a collection of works not restricted to the twelve-tone technique, is a viola player born into a Romanian vocal family. She studied with Caşkacian and has performed as a soloist with renowned orchestras and performers, as well as being a member of the Derian Quartet, the Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchestra, and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. In this album, Hannenheim performs with the Russian pianist Kamenz, who has been called "a giant of the piano," in a powerful and well-matched ensemble. A pupil of Schoenberg (1874-1951), Hannenheim also wrote atonal music using the twelve-tone technique and his own freer sequences of notes, sounding modern for the first half of the 20th century. However, he was not avant-garde, and in the viola work recorded here, he even uses C major chords, and the dance-like compound time signatures remind us of Bartók.
