A program featuring Dutch cellist Rade Markels that blends Bach with modern and contemporary works Maike Rademarkers is from the Netherlands. After receiving her first cello lessons from Hungarian cellist György Siffert, she was recognized by André Navara at a master class she attended at age 16 and went on to study under him in Vienna for the last two years of his life. He later studied under Starker in the United States, returned to the Netherlands, and has since focused his career on chamber music and other genres. Here, she alternates recordings of Bach’s unaccompanied cello suites with modern and contemporary works. Penderecki’s *Per Slava*, composed based on the B.A.C.H. motif, serves as the central thread tying together the series of works included in this three-disc set. Kurtág’s piece ends on a high C, serving as a natural introduction to No. 3, while Britten’s work foreshadows the dark world of No. 5, which follows—creating a program in which all the pieces are masterfully interconnected.
