Natural horns sound beautifully in this second Mendelssohn concert by Friend, conducted by the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra. Friend has always been particular about the instruments he uses and the score, and this time, too, he has adopted natural horns in Scotland, which is full of interesting points. The First Symphony was written when Mendelssohn was 15 years old. Friend says that the reason for this is that "it is difficult for adults to accept a boy who has achieved something so great. The writing style of the boy, which is not quite 15 years old but still fresh, is reminiscent of a youth. Scotland was begun in 1829, but was stopped shortly after, and not completed until 10 years later.Friend says the reason for this may be that the instruments and music of the time were changing at such a rapid pace. In fact, in his performances, he uses natural horns (which play a very important role in Scotland), trumpets with pistons, and other thoughtful instrument choices. As artistic director of the ancient music ensemble Combattimento Consort (1982-2013), Friend became popular for his revival of operatic and other works by composers who were little known at the time. He has been Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra since 2006. In addition to its activities as an orchestra, the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra has formed several ensembles, including the Baroque Academy of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, which is dedicated to the performance of ancient music.He has also been active in antique music for a long time, and has responded promptly to Friend's meticulous score research and considerations regarding the adoption of instruments, making him a driving force in the Dutch music scene.
