Description:

Pirate copies of the show at the Matrix had been available to fans for some time, most of them in inferior sound quality, but popular nonetheless. The first two tracks from the Matrix show were included on "THE DOORS: BOX SET" and the sound began to improve in 1997 when it was officially released. Unfortunately, it was soon discovered that the recordings used on this release were not from the original tapes, but from their grandchildren's copies (3rd generation tapes). This time, the original recording by Abram was painstakingly remastered by Bruce Botnick, the Doors' longtime engineer/mixer, and is now officially released as "LIVE AT THE MATRIX 1967: THE ORIGINAL MASTERS". The original masters are included here. It contains all 37 tracks from both shows that originated from the original masters.Aside from the 15 songs that were released exclusively on Record Store Day in 2017 and 2018, most of the newly upgraded live material, including eight songs that have not appeared in previous Matrix productions, will be available to the public for the first time in this collection. It is easy to understand the enduring appeal of these old-school performances by Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore. Recorded just months before "Set Your Heart on Fire" propelled the band to worldwide success, the tape captures the Doors performing a wide range of songs, including "Break on Through," "Soul Kitchen," "The End," and several others from their eponymous debut. They also perform half of the other songs that were to be on their soon-to-be-recorded second album, "Strange Days," including "Moonlight Drive" and an early rendition of "Maboroshi no Sekai" (The World of Maboroshi).Fifteen shows in five nights at the Matrix gave the band time to indulge their love of the blues with extended covers of "King Bee" and "Crawling King Snake". In the liner notes to the collection, Joel Selvin notes. 'Young, fresh, and eager to do whatever they wanted, they were about to spread their wings and take off.' The performances on tape are raw, rough and sketchy in places. Not overly conscious, just as they are: this is pure Doors" (2/2).
