Recorded on June 30, 1971, at the legendary Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia and broadcast live on local radio station WMMR, the album *THENECESSARYCOSMICFRENZY*—featuring this rare studio live performance under the name "Lant"—is now available as a general release CD! Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Todd Rundgren is known by many titles, including “unparalleled melody maker” and “genius of pop music.” Known as an alchemist of sound, he has been active as a member of the Nazz—considered the quintessence of 1960s psychedelic groups—as a solo artist and multi-instrumentalist who crafts beautiful melodies, and as a member of the progressive band Utopia. In addition to working with international artists such as Grand Funk Railroad and Hall & Oates, and from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, he produced works by Japanese artists such as Repish and Hiroshi Takano. He is a legend who has built a career spanning over half a century through his diverse activities. Todd Rundgren captivated audiences during his Japan tour in March 2026, and now, the rare live album *THENECESSARYCOSMICFRENZY*, capturing his very first solo performance, will be released not only as a Record Store Day 2026 exclusive vinyl edition but also as a CD available through general distribution! The recordings featured here are from a studio live session performed by Todd Rundgren under the name "Runt" on June 30, 1971, at the legendary Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, which was broadcast live on the Philadelphia radio station WMMR at the time. This studio session features Mark "Muggy" Klingman, who would later become the keyboardist for Utopia, as well as bassist Stu Woods, guitarist Tom Cosgrove, and drummer Norman "N.D." Smart.
