Setting aside the question of whether having too much shared context and background is actually a good thing for the work, this new album is a compilation of tracks said to have been completed to a certain extent, combined with ideas he had been nurturing during his lifetime. Without coming across as an overly sentimental tribute, the production—supported by Swedish collaborators like Vargas & Lagola, who have been involved since the days of *HeyBrother* (2013), and Carl Folk, who contributed to recent works such as *Broken Arrows* (2015) and * Without You” (2017), among others—have supported a “business-as-usual” production process that maximizes the personal atmosphere permeating the entire album. Overall, it’s a simple synth-pop collection that extends the euphoric style of *Avici (01)* (2017), and the way it softly incorporates contemporary Caribbean and exotic vibes—a result of modern production techniques—makes for a natural and seamless evolution in style that listeners can enjoy without any sense of dissonance. If you thought it sounded somewhat like Ed Sheeran, “SOS”—which samples TLC’s “No Scrubs”—features the familiar voice of Arrow Black singing in a resonant tone; “Heaven,” reportedly co-written with Chris Martin around the same time as Coldplay’s “A Sky Full of Stars” (2014); “Tough Love,” with its hint of Eastern psychedelia; and “Freak,” which samples the lonely whistle from Kyu Sakamoto’s “Look Up and Walk On”—these are the highlights where you can fully savor Avicii’s signature style, which always takes a unique turn. Opening with the ethereal “Peace of Mind”—a track one can’t help but interpret as deeply meaningful—and amplifying its beautiful hues with melancholic downtempo tracks like “ "Ain’t A Thing," which doubles the beautiful hues, and the final track "Fades Away"—which seems to rush off somewhere only to make you pause for a moment at the very end—creates an indescribably memorable conclusion. bounce (C) Koji Dezhima
