German-born New Yorker Theo Breckmann, a vocalist who has previously contributed to ECM recordings of Kurt Weill works with Meredith Monk and Julia Halssmann, makes his leader debut. This work strongly showcases his compositional side as well as his singing, creating an "ambient" album where vocals are integrated even into instrumental tracks. The lineup features Ben Monder on guitar, Shai Maestro on keyboards, and the rhythm section of Chris Tordini and John Hollenbeck. Highlights include the sublime rendition of Stephen Sondheim's original "Comedy Tonight," the sweet vocals on "Little Elegy," and the painfully poetic "To Be Shown to Monks at a Certain Temple." "This album title has meaning. Every track relates to 'death' or 'transcendence.' Several instrumentals come with a 'funeral procession' march."In 'Take My Life,' I imagined what happens when you die—what it means to gradually lose your voice, your heartbeat, your breath. I envisioned Bach and his cantata 'Ich habe genug,' a piece joyfully embracing the afterlife. With this work, I wanted to compose music that sheds light on death, not in a gloomy way." — Breckman
