Description:
The debut album from Charles Lloyd’s highly anticipated new quintet, “The Marvels.” Nora Jones and Willie Nelson each contribute a track on vocals! The catalyst for this album was when Charles Lloyd invited guitarist Bill Frisell to perform with him at Royce Hall at UCLA in 2013. The two had shared the stage a little earlier that year, and as Lloyd put it, “We were perfectly in sync. I was convinced we could create even more sounds together. Bill is very sensitive and intuitive. He told me he was in Denver as a child and was influenced by my first band, which I formed with Jack DeJohnette and Keith Jarrett. He said that music greatly expanded his imagination and showed him countless new possibilities. So when we’re together, we don’t really need to talk much. All our feelings are expressed through the music and the sound,” he said. Lloyd had intended for his next Blue Note release to be a live album, but his wife, Dorothy Darr (who co-produced this album with Lloyd and Don Was), insisted on a studio recording with vocals. Lloyd agreed, saying, “I love vocals too,” and so it became a studio album. The album opens with Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War” and also includes Willie Nelson’s anti-war song “Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream,” among others. Around the time Charles Lloyd had disappeared from the stage and was holed up in Big Sur, a friend gave him Nelson’s 1978 jazz standards album *Stardust*, which prompted Lloyd to say, “I felt there was a sense of synchronicity with Nelson in terms of song selection.” The album also features Nora Jones singing "You Are So Beautiful," composed by Billy Preston and made into a huge hit by Joe National in 1974. "I sometimes play it as an encore at concerts. In my mind’s ear, I can always hear Nora singing these lyrics with such warmth. Her voice is the sixth instrument on this track.” The album also features one of Lloyd’s original compositions, as well as “Of Course, Of Course” and “Sombrero Sam,” both first recorded on the 1966 album *DreamWeaver*. It also includes the traditional song “La Llorona” (which was also featured on the 2009 ECM release *Mirror*), “All My Trials,” “Abide With Me,” and “Shenandoah.” The potential of this band is still immeasurable!
