Vijay Iyer, the highly acclaimed pianist who stands alongside Robert Glasper as one of the twin pillars of the New York jazz scene, returns with his second ECM release in a year. Unlike his previous work, this is the long-awaited trio album. It's a work that can only be achieved after exhausting all formal elements. As Vijay Iyer states, "The 'break' is actually the time of action. It's the foundation for breakdowns, breakbeats, breakdancing—the moment when life is breathed into it." The tracks on this album, including those premiered at MoMA's Sweet Premiere in New York and pieces originating from his collaboration with novelist Teju Cole and a large ensemble, Open City, break down Iyer's previous work and are performed with greater energy by this trio, moving the listener. "Hood" pays tribute to Detroit techno pioneer Robert Hood. In "Work," Vijay pays homage to his greatest hero, Thelonious Monk. "Countdown" reimagines Coltrane's classic tune within a rhythm framework inspired by West African music, while "Mystery Woman" features a driving beat hinting at South Indian drumming. This album establishes the trio's distinctive musical identity, characterized by swift movement and quick wit. There are ample moments to savor each member's solos as the three explore various driving forces through what Iyer calls "reconstruction." Midway through the album, Iyer performs Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count" solo, making this a compelling and powerful work.
