Daví Villeyes, a 30-year-old pianist/composer (as of 2014) born and raised in Santiago, Cuba, who later emigrated to Canada and is now based in Brooklyn, NY, makes his ECM debut as a leader. This is his second album, following his highly acclaimed 2012 Pi Recordings debut Continuum. Once again, he weaves the unique rhythms of Afro-Cuban religious rituals—his roots—into contemporary music, resonating as if to imbue it with mystery and meaning. "Mboko" means "foundation," "sugar cane," and also refers to the "voice of the soul," the spirit's voice, in the Cuban faith of Abakuá. The idea behind this work is that sound is one of the revered elements within this culture. The worship of sound itself is depicted within the compositions of this album, shaped through performance. While Villejes himself does not practice Abakuá, he states that the more he explored Abakuá music, the clearer it became where his own music came from and where it was headed. He also notes that this album could not have been made without Roman Diaz.A new form of jazz that is truly sacred.
