The second ECM album by the super-technical trio "Fly" featuring Larry Grenadier (b), Mark Turner (ts), and Jeff Ballard (ds)! Fly enjoys immense popularity as a super-technical unit featuring three musicians who were active as sidemen for Chick Corea. Their delicate yet robust music, created through an unusual "pianoless" approach and a spirit of selfless cooperation, has always attracted the attention of jazz musicians and listeners alike. Mark Turner's saxophone lines are meticulously constructed, yet incorporate many innovative and adventurous ideas, showcasing his technique across the entire range of the horn. Turner's playing here is ultimately conscious of the balance of the trio. Fly has a unique ensemble identity based on the dedication of each of the three members, and Turner's saxophone, while cool, maintains a tension that is always on the verge of boiling over, made even more prominent by the ever-changing rhythm patterns played by Barald's drums.Then Grenadier's double bass responds to Turner's saxophone line with a counter-melody, before playing in unison with Turner using arco. In this work, composition and improvisation fuse at an even higher level. While maintaining the original structure, the session, which was varied through improvisation, culminated in "The Western Lands". Produced by Manfred Eicher.
