A reissue set of three albums—Sart, Witchi-Tai-To, and Dansere—released in the 1970s by avant-garde saxophonist Jan Garbarek, a leading ECM artist from Norway, with his quartet/quintet featuring Bobo Stenson. A quintessential ECM artist, his career evolved from a freaky, avant-garde phase heavily influenced by John Coltrane, gradually shifting towards a more stoic direction. His sound transformed into a minimal, ambient style while incorporating ethnic elements. Particularly adept on soprano saxophone, he is renowned for his uniquely transparent tone. This set includes his 1971 album Sart, recorded with the quintet featuring Bobo Stenson (p, el-p), Terje Rypdal (g), Arild Andersen (b), and Jon Christensen (perc), as well as the 1973 album Dansere, recorded with the quartet featuring Bobo Stenson (p), Pelle Danielsson (b), and Jon Christensen (ds), and 1975's "Dansere" are included in this release.Each work is imbued with the characteristic Nordic jazz sound—quiet and transparent—but Dansere stands out as the album where this quartet reached its ultimate form. Here, the quartet's early Coltrane-esque/free jazz playing style is purified into something supremely simple, giving birth to a sound that is all the more resilient for it. This trilogy invites you to savor that evolution at a leisurely pace.
