Shabaka & The Ancestors
Description:
Shabaka and the Ancestors, formed in 2016 by Shabaka Hutchings, a charismatic tenor saxophonist leading a new generation of the UK jazz scene, as Shabaka and the Ancestors, their second album to be released on Impulse. Shabaka and the Ancestors' major label debut. Among the three groups that Shabaka is currently active as a main member, this is the group that actively reflects his own personal ideas in their music. Their last album, "Wisdom of Elders," was a session document with a group of South African jazz musicians whom Shabaka respected and admired, and it made a big impact on the current jazz scene. This album, like its predecessor, features artists with African roots, such as Tumi Mogolosi, and is deeply connected to the African culture that is at the root of their work. Shabaka himself says that he wants this album to be a "griot" of music that crosses the globe today. Therefore, the album is structured as a single story, with each song title, lyrics, and other details that make it a work of art that demands attention.(Grio: An ancient culture in West Africa that refers to hereditary musicians. People who have sung myths and history into poems and songs for future generations in a culture that has no written language.) All compositions were written by Shabaka himself. The theme of this work is the destination of our human race: extinction. It raises questions about the actions and ideas that society, and individuals, should take to change that tragic future. Yet, despite the deep themes, Shabaka's powerful tenor saxophone is open and his tone is inspiring on this album.
