The ninth studio album by the unpredictable Kanye West is a gospel album inspired by his “Sunday Service” events. That said, after listening to artists like Chance the Rapper—who has a strong gospel influence—this album, much like 2018’s *Yee* and *Kids See Ghosts*, is a release that longtime Kanye fans can genuinely enjoy, especially when compared to the industrial-sounding *Eezus*. While strategically incorporating the explosive gospel choir from track (1), the album features Kanye-esque rap tracks like the lead single (3), a catchy trap-style track (5), a track featuring Ant Clemons on vocals (7), and R&B tracks where he sings himself (8)—the entire album leaves you captivated by the sheer quality of the songs themselves. The compositional skill that takes the track from the ominous mood of (10)—featuring Pusha T and No Maris, and even the saxophone of the great Kenny G—and builds it up to a sense of liberating euphoria is certainly due in part to the efforts of the production team, including Timbaland and Worlin Campbell, who handled five of the tracks, it is likely the work of Kanye’s genius—or eccentricity (?). However, it’s doubtful he’ll continue down this gospel path indefinitely, and the fact that we’re already curious about his next move is, once again, typical of Kanye. (C) Daisuke Okamoto
