This is the first recording on ECM since John Scofield’s *Swallow Tales* and Carla Bley’s *Life Goes On* in 2020.
This renowned bassist has gathered close friends to perform a collection of songs that are among the most essential he has ever written, featuring melodies that resonate intuitively.
Swallow comments: “Before *WinterSongs*, I had devoted everything I could to music, but while making this album, the situation changed completely. Music gave me what I needed. Music is as fundamental as the air we breathe…”
A skilled yet delicate horn section featuring saxophonist Chris Cheek and trumpeter Mike Rodriguez, Adam Nusbaum on drums, laying down a flexible rhythm, and the rich harmonic contours provided by guitarist Steve Cardenas and pianist Gil Goldstein. The nine original compositions that make up *WinterSongs* serve not so much to incite turbulent improvisation as to convey patient introspection and tranquility. Swallow’s explanation of how this music came to be is evident in its very sound. This music is not played as a means to an end, but is an end in itself. Flowing swing, contemplative ballads, and a chamber-like sense of space and interaction are fully realized here.
