Saxophonist Walter Smith III, who has consistently been at the forefront of the scene since his 2006 debut, collaborating with artists like Herbie Hancock, Jason Moran, Terence Blanchard, and Maria Schneider, presents his third Blue Note album. This album is positioned as the second installment following his 2018 album 'Twio', which explored the possibilities of a cordless saxophone trio. 'Twio' featured the trio of Harish Raghavan (b) and Eric Harland (ds) On this album, 'Twio Vol. 2', the trio of Joe Sanders (b) and Kendrick Scott (ds) is joined by special guests Ron Carter (b) and Branford Marsalis (ts), two legends of the genre.Centered around standards, the album features a wide-ranging selection including compositions by Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, Carla Bley, Ellis Marsalis, and original tracks penned by Smith himself. This allows listeners to savor the thrilling and playful performances unique to a cordless ensemble. On the lead single "My Ideal," Smith's sound is striking as he plays the saxophone with ease and freedom within a medium tempo. Regarding this album, Smith states, "One goal with this project was to find songs that are part of the standard repertoire but aren't played very often. We looked for tunes that weren't too traditional, ones we could play in our own style. We've done a lot of live shows with this trio, but we never discuss what songs to play. We don't call out song titles; we just start playing and let the flow take us." Regarding guest musicians Ron Carter and Branford Marsalis, he added, "Branford is someone I've admired since I started playing saxophone seriously."Ron's playing carries a message: 'Don't just focus on what you want to do; listen to what the other musicians are playing too.'
