Guitar legend Bill Frisell, who turns 75 this March, has released his first new album in two years! Frisell expresses not only jazz but also pop, roots music, and all genres with his unique sound, and has won one Grammy Award and been nominated eight times. This album, his fifth release on Blue Note, was recorded with a new sextet featuring the musicians he has collaborated with most in recent years: Jenny Scheinman (violin), Aivind Kang (viola), Hank Roberts (cello), Thomas Morgan (b), and Rudy Royston (ds). The core songs were recorded live across the United States in 2025, with additional recording done later in a California studio. The result is a hybrid work that blends the improvisational nature of live performance with the sonic creative process of the studio. The concept for this work is based on a dream Frizer had over 30 years ago. In the dream, he was in a library filled with stacks of old books, and monks told him, "We know you are a musician.So I want you to listen to what real music is," he was told, and then the music of his beloved Nino Rota, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Charles Ives, Jimi Hendrix, Hank Williams, Andrés Segovia, Robert Johnson, and others flowed through him with crystal clarity, and he awoke. Since then, Frisell has pursued the purity and vividness of the music he experienced in his dream as his ideal. He says of the background to this work, "Over the years of playing with them, there were moments when I felt I was getting closer to that dream I had long ago.
