The latest Blue Note quartet work by guitarist/composer Nels Cline, who is also a longtime member of Wilco.
In 2011, Nels Cline was named #82 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The Greatest Guitarists of All Time. This debut album features a new band consisting of saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, bassist Chris Lightcap, and drummer Tom Rainey. Seamlessly blending composition and improvisation, and skillfully balancing swing and avant-garde, the sound is the essence of Klein's versatility as a performer and composer, and is an ambitious work that he himself recalls as "more like a jazz group than his previous works.
This album was inspired by a gathering of the members for a free improvisation at The Stone, a live space run by John Zorn, about six years ago. Soon after, it became a corona disaster, and Klein wrote half of this work during the lockdown.About this album, he says, "At first I was looking for a more conservative approach - a little more traditional. But as time went on, we started looping and writing songs with more funky grooves. The band started by trying to keep everything simple, with very few effects. But gradually we realized that the overdriven guitar sound would fit perfectly with the tenor saxophone sound."
Regarding the band members, he said, "The band has one of the best drummers on the planet, Tom Rainey. (Lightcap) plays real bass and he has a solid support system, it's a deep feeling. (Laubrock) handles the impenetrable chord changes with a deftness that combines great skill with a certain intimacy. I am always overwhelmed when I hear her play. It sounds as if this piece is her record."
