Hailed as a "poet of the piano" for his delicate touch and beautiful melodies, veteran pianist Fred Hirsch has been at the forefront of the jazz world for more than 30 years, and this is his first trio album for ECM, following the release of his solo album "Silent, Listening" last year. On this album, Hirsch, along with Drew Gress (bass) and Joey Barron (drums), performs a wide range of music, from standards to rarely performed jazz pieces. The group tackles a variety of 20th century compositions and three originals. Drew and Joey are longtime associates of Hirsch's, having played with Fred since the early and late '80s, respectively. But this is their first studio recording as a trio, and their masterful collective approach, shaped by decades of experience, can be heard on every piece. Joey is a genius at dynamics, so it was no problem at all for the Audi Trio to hear each other."Drew's playing, for example, in "Plainsong" and "The Surrounding Green," is very trustworthy in how he works through the harmonies, where he pauses and where he moves on. With this album, I feel we can really hear history! I hope you can feel the maturity of the interactions, the sound worlds, and the subtlety," Hirsch commented. Hirsch's own work is impressive in its lyrical intensity, the elaborate harmonies and interwoven counterpoints of "Plainsong" shine through, the timeless melodic invention of the title track "The Surrounding Green," the irresistible "Anticipation," and the There's a Brazilian groove." The solo performance of "Plainsong" had already introduced the intimacy of the melody, but the trio arrangement heard here is quietly revelatory, with the bass and drums adding a fresh pulse and expanding the harmonic dimension. The title track and "Anticipation" are new additions to Hirsch's songbook.
