This is a live recording of Pare Mikkelborg's return performance at the Danish Radio Concert Hall on February 10, 2023. Guitarist Jakob Bro says of the recording, "When I walked out on stage, it was like a homecoming." The recording brings together three musicians who are at the heart of Danish improvisation and represent three generations of Danish jazz. The repertoire is primarily Bro's, but also includes Mikkelborg's piece "Youth" and Pare and Jacob's collaboration "Returns," which is tackled in a spontaneous and exploratory spirit. Marilyn Mazur's delicate percussion, gongs, bowed metal, and clanging drums blend with Bro's drifting, rippling sound, and the material is gently transformed and reinvented. The music's atmospheric qualities and eruptive moments are enhanced by the hall's resonant acoustics. Reviewing the concert for the Nordic music magazine GAFFA, Ivan Rodt wrote, "In just one hour spent with Mikkelborg, Masur, and Bro, the world was transformed. The familiar framework was clearly transformed through moments of beauty and lingering silence," he wrote.Jacob Bro and Pare Mikkelborg have been friends for many years and have long discussed the possibility of collaboration in various idioms. They began performing together regularly 10 years ago. Improvisation with Jon Christensen and Thomas Morgan set several directions that eventually led to the 2018 album Returnings; Marilyn Mazur took over percussion in 2020: "Since then the music has continued to develop," Jakob says. The music has been evolving ever since," says Jacob, referring to its ever-changing nature. There is an air in the music, a great freedom, a common desire to create something that cannot always be explained but can be felt.
