Their music is not only great, but courageous and contemporary. Protect Your Light embodies much of the history of impulse! Every once in a while, the world is blessed with a band that helps define an era. Their sound, purpose, and energy speak directly to the cultural moment. The individual members mirror the identity, perspective, and aspirations of the community, and collectively, the group forms a supernova. Usually, it is history that inscribes the names of such bands in the books, but occasionally we catch a glimpse of their majesty unfolding in real time: in 2023, that band is the Irreversible Entanglements (IE), a free jazz quintet with an experimental punk mentality. The band is.And "Protect Your Light" is an artistic and social statement that simultaneously blends in with and tweaks the zeitgeist. Poet/vocalist Kamaye Ayewa (often known as Moore Mather), bassist Luke Stewart, trumpeter Achilles Navarro, saxophonist Keir Neuringer, and drummer Chesar Holmes all contribute to the eight-song record with unconditional statements of intent and rhythms, IE's improvisations are shaped in the fire of the moment, its songs are born of experience, and music and life are one. There is no band on earth like them, and no recent album like this one, recorded over three days in January 2023 at the historic Rudy Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, for Chicago's International It is the band's most accomplished work, surpassing the three classic albums produced for Anthem.Great members of IE, such as pianist Janice A. Lowe, cellist Lester St. Louis, and vocalist Sovereign Sovereign, are joined by others to shed light on the band's musical dexterity and expand its beautiful range of consciousness. The eight songs were composed both individually and collectively, with some themes brand new and others rooted in IE's spirited, fully improvised live performances. Navarro is the star of the groove on the first single, "Free Love," which is heavy on the fanfare of the Panamanian-bred trumpeter and the declaration of what the band calls "a universal message of unity through the love that lives in you, the love that lives in freedom. That's why Irreversible Entanglements makes the world feel blessed again. What defines this band, the beauty of "Protect Your Light" and the moments it represents, is love for the people, love for the black music tradition, love for each other, and, as they say, playing.
