Description:

This is the first DECCA US release by Swedish musician/singer/songwriter Benjamin Gustafsson. Introspective and philosophical, Gustafsson has struggled with mental health conditions for years, finding solace in music and developing his artistic voice in solitude. He is a meticulous and highly critical self-producer. This major label debut is the culmination of a lifelong journey to understand the inner forces that have shaped his life and the lives of those around him. The project required Ben to step out of his comfort zone, and he created a community of collaborators around his Tambourine Studio in Malmö, Sweden, where he is now based. The first single from the album, "Sleeping?" is now available for download. It is a moving and elegant song, melancholy and mournful but not without hope, enhanced by Benjamin's soft-focused vocals and musically rich backing. A cover of Avicii's hit "Wake Me Up," also from Sweden, is also available for download. The Malmö-based artist has spent most of his career writing and recording without any big plans or expectations of where he will land. Instrumentally and classically influenced by the likes of The Album Leaf, Ef, Olafur Arnalds, and Coldplay, Gustafsson says he twists the lens to create pieces that have that vibe and feeling, but are also a little sharper. Gustafsson is also a feeling artist, and the album includes a cover of Nick Drake's "Which Will. At the heart of this work is Benjamin's relationship with his mental health and his refusal to give in to it. Music was his solace and therapy. Dark moments became inspiration, and projected shadows became shadows in the mix. Ultimately, the record is a record of hope, a black and white canvas sprinkled with texture, atmosphere, and Technicolor.
