Joshua Redman

Description:

Joshua Redman, the premier saxophonist, has quickly risen to the top of the jazz world after winning the Thelonious Monk Competition in 1991 and has been nominated for 11 Grammy Awards. He is the most highly acclaimed and charismatic saxophonist to emerge from the jazz scene in the past 30 years, and this is his first release with the prestigious Blue Note! This album is his first vocal project and features Gabriel Cavassa on vocals. He is a young prodigy who won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2019, which also produced Samara Joy, and was selected for this project because of his talent. The concept is "Praise and Critique of America," consisting of 13 original and standard songs about specific places in the United States, such as Chicago, New Orleans, and Alabama. Note that the band plays Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia" and John Coltrane's "Alabama," among others. The band is an ironclad lineup of Aaron Parks (p), Joe Sanders (b), and Brian Braid (ds). The album also features guest appearances by Nicholas Payton (tp), Kurt Rosenwinkel (g), Peter Bernstein (g), Joel Ross (vibes), and many others. Joshua, who has left a significant mark on the history of jazz, has once again dedicated this remarkable work to his native America. The concept of this album is very simple," said Redman. "The songs are about, or at least refer to, the geographical location of the United States, and to a lesser or greater degree, the songs are about the people of the United States. It's a ballad album, a standards album, a social commentary album, a mashup album, and perhaps a tribute album of sorts," he said. Regarding the musicians he performed with, he said, "It was a dream come true to finally connect Aaron, Joe, and Brian, three of the most sublime, lyrical, and deeply grooving musicians on the planet, even though we had never played together as a rhythm section before. And collaborating with Gabriel, a vocalist of exceptional style, integrity, and soul, was a transformative experience. This was my first experience recording with a singer on my own project, and I enjoyed the challenge of discovering and taking on a new musical role for myself in the process.
