Artemis, a super group of contemporary jazz's finest female players, is back with its second Blue Note album in three years! Continuing from the previous Blue Note release, Artemis features pianist and musical director Lynnie Rosnes, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, bassist Noriko Ueda, and drummer Allison Miller, along with new additions Nicole Glover on tenor saxophone and Alexa Tarantino on saxophone. In addition to their own original compositions, the band includes covers of songs by Wayne Shorter and Lyle Mays. This remarkable album highlights the improvisational strength and songwriting talent of the members. The first of the preceding singles, "Lights Away from Home," was composed by Noriko Ueda, inspired by a meteor shower she saw on a small isolated island in upstate New York, and opens the album. About this song, Ueda says, "The next morning, I sat on the rock where I saw the meteor shower and sketched it, remembering the excitement of the moment. My aim was to write something with a positive and cheerful atmosphere".The group, which debuted in 2020, "has the ability to move gracefully between different styles and moods, sounding alternately authoritative and playful. Artemis means gentle yet powerful, subverting expectations. The music feels like a nuanced assertion of the need for fresh perspectives" (Wall Street Journal), "The group's ability to do so is astounding" (Downbeat), and many other accolades, and their debut album was a commercial success.
