At just 22 years old, Samara Joy is a female jazz vocalist from New York City who has been praised by the New York Times for her "voice as rich as custard" (New York Times) and "serene, leisurely music" (NPR) with an overwhelming expressive power reminiscent of Sarah Vaughan. Her authentic jazz vocals are a rarity in recent years, yet her music has been widely popular among the social networking generation, with more than one million likes on TikTok. Her debut major label album is released on the prestigious Verve label, and features her own unique take on the standards that she loves. The album was produced in a style called Vocalise, in which she arranges her favorite standard songs in her own style, sometimes using solo melodies of famous instruments to sing original lyrics. Recorded at Sear Sound in New York City, the album features such virtuosos as Pasquale Grasso (g), Ben Patterson (p), David Wong (b), and Kenny Washington (ds).The track list ranges from well-known standards such as Gershwin's "Someone to Watch Over Me" and Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" to unusual selections such as Fats Navarro's "Nostalgia (The Day I Knew).
