Paul Motian was a great drummer who played in the trios of Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett and was involved in many great recordings. This tribute work celebrates Motian's legacy, performed by a guitarist and saxophonist who worked closely with him during his lifetime, along with musicians from different generations. Guitarist Jacob Bro, now an ECM recording artist, and saxophonist Joe Lovano form a small ensemble with several generations of leading jazz musicians who are now at the forefront of the field, in a grand celebration of the musical legacy of drummer icon Paul Motian. This work is a grand celebration of the musical legacy of drumming icon Paul Motian. Joe Lovano and Jacob Bro lead a party of seven in original compositions that recall the idioms and idiosyncrasies that have influenced Motian's 60-plus year musical career. Lovano and Motian have been close colleagues for many years, with their most famous collaboration being their groundbreaking trio featuring Bill Frisell, who has released three albums on Ko ECM. Meanwhile, Jacob Bro made his ECM debut with Motian's album Garden of Eden (2006). This album consists of original compositions by Joe and Jacob, improvisations in which they all participated, and "drum music" by Motian.
