A two-disc best-of set celebrating 60 years of impulse! Orange and black. Flame and ebony. Anger and pride. Wearing their signature colors proudly and with exclamation points held high, impulse! Records was a label for music that embraced the explorations and political challenges of the '60s. founded in 1961, impulse brought jazz into the era of black power, Afrocentricity, and spiritual expansion. In a balance of tradition and transition, Impulse bridged the golden age of jazz, a brief period from the late 50s through the 70s, when the leading players of every jazz era, from Louis Armstrong to Albert Isler, were alive and kicking. Impulse treated all musicians as innovators and revolutionaries, from swing and bebop to free and Afrofuturist.The performances in this work, IMPULSE RECORDS: MUSIC, MESSAGE AND THE MOMENT, not only focus on a historical moment when the promise of change was in the air and the message of racial harmony was in the music, but also embrace a wide range of styles and sounds that from which it draws its staying power. Today, the music has not lost its relevance: the promise is still deferred and the message is still in time.
