Description:
Parts & Labor were mainstays of the American noise-rock underground which flourished during the 2000s, and even if they never received the major critical acclaim or cult following of someone like Lightning Bolt or Black Dice, they toured constantly and released a sizeable discography of powerful, risk-taking records. Most significantly, they stood apart due to the way they combined freewheeling noise, triumphant melodies, and muscular drumming in equal measures. After making a few diversions such as a fully electronic EP and an attempt to make grindcore pop songs, they released their most accessible effort, Constant Future, before calling it a day around the bands tenth anniversary in 2012. Dan Friel released solo electronic efforts which continued in the colorful, jagged path of Parts & Labor, and additionally formed the power trio Upper Wilds. Set of All Sets is Parts & Labors grand reunion, with Friel and co-founder BJ Warshaw joined by the bands two longest-tenured drummers, composer/podcaster Joe Wong and music journalist Christopher Weingarten. The 79-minute albums tone is never anything less than triumphant, with most of the songs racing at rocket-powered speeds, taking influence from the restless speed of singeli as well as Krautrocks sprawling Motorik rhythms. Friels short-circuiting electronics burst and scramble with joy, while the lyrics encourage action and progress even as the world has gotten more challenging and oppressive since we last heard from the band. Variations of the 85-second "Descending" appear as interludes three times during the course of the album, featuring a constantly falling chord progression meant to imply motion even though it doesnt actually go anywhere. "Seamripper" is a distorted industrial sludgefest, while "Anti-Lions and Lemonade" patiently moves with gated arpeggios, clacking percussion, and wind-like synths. "Like Theyre Here to Stay" has an 80s arena rock stomp, as if it were a Def Leppard song in a past life. Other than exceptions like these, much of the album is racing, anthemic, and bound for glory, even if the world continues to fall apart as the group hurdles toward the finish line. ~ Paul Simpson
