Description:
Robillard and Szabo, longtime collaborators for 25 years, reveal the “truth” about Kodály and Ravel! This is the third collaborative album by Virginie Robillard and Péter Szabó, close friends for 25 years. For this project, they have taken on two masterpieces that, despite their minimalist instrumentation—violin and cello—demand an expressive power rivaling that of an orchestra and create an intense sense of tension. Composed in 1914, the year World War I broke out, Kodály’s “Duet” is a work in which a bold exploration of form is deeply intertwined with the folk music traditions of Central Europe, particularly Hungary. The contrast between the second movement—which vividly captures human cruelty and despair—and the outer movements, where folk dance rhythms explode with vitality, overwhelms the listener. Meanwhile, Ravel’s “Sonata,” written between 1920 and 1922, is an ambitious work that marked a turning point for the composer, who described it as a turning point he described as “simplification to the extreme” and a “break with the magic of harmony.” Abandoning the harmonic support of the piano, two razor-sharp melodies intersect as if sparking fire; it is a formidable piece of music that could be called “the pinnacle of musical abstraction.” As Robillard herself notes, neither piece is pleasant music intended to appeal to a broad audience; rather, they are works of raw beauty that squarely embrace the shadows, rough edges, and even the distortions of music. Please pay close attention to the vivid musical dialogue as these two masters clash without compromise. Virginie Robillard (Violin) A prize winner at competitions such as the Ron Thibaud International Competition, she made her debut at Lincoln Center in New York at the age of 19. She spent 10 years in Venezuela, where she established a violin school, and is deeply committed to educational activities. She currently serves as professor of violin and head of the string department at the Lausanne Conservatory of Music in Switzerland. Péter Szabó (Cello) A renowned Hungarian musician who has served as principal cellist of the Budapest Festival Orchestra since 1993. In addition to being known as a founding member of the Takács Piano Trio, he has made significant contributions in the fields of research and musical rediscovery, such as discovering, completing, and publishing the manuscript of a previously unpublished cello concerto by Pleyel. In 2024, he was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary. Tokyo M-Plus
