Ditta Roman, Hungarian cellist of note, has recorded unaccompanied cello works by her native composers Kodály, Kurtág, Ligeti, Eötvös, and Dukai. Roman, who studied with world-renowned cellists such as Ivan Monighetti and Miklós Perenyi, is known as Perenyi's treasured child and is active mainly in Europe. In 2012, he won the second prize in the cello section of the International Bach Competition in Leipzig. Her performances have always been feminine and dainty, with a clean, legitimate style that speaks to you gently, but on this disc she plays her own country's works with great eloquence. Kodaly's Sonata for unaccompanied cello, which uses Transylvanian folk techniques, was premiered at the First International Festival of Contemporary Music in Salzburg in 1923, and is now an essential part of the cellist's repertoire.Roman has released on the Hungaroton label the first collection of Bach's unaccompanied Suites Nos. 1, 3 and 5 (HCD 32731), the second collection of Bach's Suites Nos. 2, 4 and 6 (HCD 32732), Violin Sonatas Nos. 2 and 3, Partita for solo flute, and Partita No. 3 in an arrangement for five-string cello and piccolo (HCD 32796).
