Released by Sony’s Okeh Records, this masterpiece—featuring the beautiful music of RGG, which had been hailed in Poland as a piano trio on par with the Marcin Wasilewski Trio—has finally come into its own on the international stage. The album title, open to diverse interpretations, also carries the meaning of “the colors surrounding musical thought.” True to that meaning, this album represents the culmination of RGG’s unique approach—which might be described as “the art of reverberation and pause,” making extensive use of tempo rubato—an approach that reached a state of perfection on their previous album, Szymanowski, featuring the young piano prodigy Łukasz Oydana. At the same time, the group breaks new ground by actively tackling cover songs; Ukrainian folk songs, the hymn “Crucem Tuam” (widely known through the Taizé Community’s renditions), and works by Ornette Coleman and Carla Bley are reinterpreted in the RGG style, radiating a new brilliance. Among these, the serene lyricism of Milton Nascimento and Fernando Pranci’s classic “Encounters and Farewells”—though brief and fleeting—stands out as a highlight of this album. The keen sensibility of Jan Smocinski, the young genius engineer who has collaborated with RGG for many years, also shines through. (Horacio) RGG is one of Poland’s leading piano trios, formed in 2001 by Przemysław Raminiak (p), Maciej Garbowski (b), and Krzysztof Grażuk (ds), who were students at the Katowice Academy of Music at the time. Even after Lukasz Oydana took over on piano in 2011, the group continues to command a significant presence, often mentioned in the same breath as Poland’s Marcin Wasilewski Trio. Their appeal lies in the constant tension between the lyrical minimalism of the tradition of Brad Mehldau and the ECM label, and the improvisational nature of free jazz. In addition to being known as the trio with which Polish jazz giant Tomasz Stanko formed his final quartet before his passing, they have also performed repeatedly with leading figures in the European free jazz scene, such as Evan Parker. In 2025, they visited Japan as part of the “Chopin Week” program at the Polish Pavilion for the Osaka-Kansai World Expo. Performing at SPACE14, they presented improvisational and ambient arrangements of Chopin’s works.
