A re-release of “Winter Journey”—originally released in 2018 and based on the poetry of contemporary Polish poet Stanisław Barańczak—now paired with a new recording of the original poems! Originally released in 2018 to great acclaim, this recording features Tomasz Konieczny singing Schubert’s *Winterreise* set to the poetry of Stanisław Balanczak, a renowned 20th-century Polish poet and translator. This exceptional release—truly a signature project of NIFC—is now set for a reissue featuring a newly recorded version of “Winterreise” sung in the original German by the same artist! Konieczny is a Polish-born dramatic bass-baritone who won the Dvořák International Vocal Competition (Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic) in 1998 and performs at opera houses around the world. His discography includes recordings with Simon Rattle, Franz Welser-Möst, Christian Thielemann, and Marek Janowski. He has also appeared at the Tokyo Spring Music Festival in 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018, steadily building his reputation in Japan. Furthermore, pianist Lew Napierala, who performs regularly with Konieczny, also appeared with him at the 2016 Tokyo Spring Music Festival. The recording of the original poems took place in August and September 2019—approximately two years after the recording of the Polish-language version—at the same Witold Lutosławski Polish Radio Concert Studio in Warsaw. By juxtaposing these recordings with the original Polish-language versions, the modern and entirely new dimensions that Balanczak’s poetry brings to the masterpiece *Winter Journey* will be brought into even sharper relief.
