American pianist Kevin Kenner was the youngest winner at the 10th International Chopin Piano Competition in 1980 and went on to achieve the highest ranking (second place, with no first place awarded) at the 12th competition in 1990, when he competed again. This release from the NIFC (Chopin Institute)—the first since NIFCCD010, which featured Chopin’s Four Impromptus—is a collection of Paderewski’s piano works! Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860–1941) was a preeminent Polish composer and pianist in the post-Chopin era; a great Polish figure who also made significant contributions as an editor of Chopin’s scores and as a politician who served as Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. The highlight of this album is the use of a 1925 Steinway piano said to have belonged to Paderewski. Furthermore, the NIFC’s new series, “Resonance,” explores the reactions to Chopin’s music—evoking concepts such as response, reverberation, and resonance. Here, traces of Chopin’s legacy in Paderewski’s music are brought to life through the masterful playing of Kevin Kenner on “Paderewski’s piano.” Tokyo M Plus
