Description:

The 19th International Chopin Piano Competition in 2025! Wan Zutong, with his sparkling personality and passion, won the 3rd Prize and the Sonata Prize! The 19th International Chopin Piano Competition was held at the Filharmonia Narodowa w Warszawie for three weeks from October 3, 2025. Many were calling for Wang Zutong (Zutong Wang) as a candidate for the top prize even before the competition began due to his excellent performance in the preliminary round. Wang Zutong, who had taken the first step forward by winning the sixth prize at the Busoni International Piano Competition in 2023, will clearly make his presence felt in Warsaw in 2025, a quarter of a century after Yundi Li won the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2000. In the first round, Wang Zutong led with mature and confident artistic expression "Nocturne in F-sharp minor, Op.48-2," written in 1841, Chopin's peak period, and in the second round, he brought freshness and national characteristics to "Three Ecossaises," published by Julien Fontana in 1855, and in the six pieces from "24 Preludes Wang Zutong skillfully portrayed the story of each of the six pieces from No. 19 to No. 24 from "24 Preludes" as a set while skillfully drawing out the individuality and characteristics of each piece. The third round of the competition was the most exciting among the first through the final rounds for the audience of the Warsaw Philharmonic. The energy etched at the beginning of "Piano Sonata No. 2" is controlled with an exquisite sense of tempo, followed by a clear and energetic scherzo that magically creates a funeral march with an almost hypnotic atmosphere, and a vivid description that makes the ominous wind blowing over the very grave in the finale seem real. The music was one of the best in this year's competition. The "Sonata No. 2" was acclaimed as one of the best performances of the competition, and it is no wonder that it was awarded the Christian Zimmermann Prize for the best performance of a sonata. Wang Zutong showed excellent compatibility with the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX piano that he had chosen for the entire period. Dashing on stage in Warsaw with their trademark white jackets, they shone with sparkling individuality and passion to take third place. Tokyo M-Plus
