A Theory of Happiness for the 2020s. Maciej Kabza was born in 1990. He studied composition under Zygmunt Krauze at the Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź and electronic music at the Polish-Japanese Institute of Information Technology in Warsaw. His works have won numerous awards at competitions both in Poland and abroad. In this song cycle, he attempts to answer the question “What is happiness?” posed by Julian Tuwim (1894–1953), a poet beloved by Szymanowski and Weinberg. Kabza employs a range of techniques—from Sprechgesang and whispers to heavy metal-style screams—while utilizing the piano percussively and making full use of electronic sounds to highlight, through music, the emotions arising from the subjective experience of happiness.
