A Polish Master Performs Two of Martinů’s Cello Works! Polish cellist Bartosz Kołak studied under Kazimierz Michalik and Andrzej Bauer at the Chopin Academy of Music, and under Philippe Müller at the Paris Conservatoire. He has won prizes in numerous competitions, including first prize at the Witold Lutosławski International Cello Competition (2001) and a special prize at the Prague Spring International Music Competition (2006). He has also been invited to perform at renowned music festivals such as Warsaw Autumn and Young Euro Classic. This album features two works composed in the United States during the 1940s—the peak of his creative career—by the great Czech composer Martinů, who left behind a body of work comprising some 400 pieces.
