A Polish Giant Has Passed Away. In Memoriam: Penderecki’s Concertos, Vol. 9! Krzysztof Penderecki (1933–2020), a leading figure in the contemporary Polish music scene, passed away on March 29 at the age of 86. As the ninth volume in the concerto series that the Polish label “DUX” has been producing to comprehensively cover Penderecki’s numerous “concertos,” the “Cello Concerto Collection” features two works: the two-movement “Sonata for Cello and Orchestra,” composed in 1964 during his early career, and the “Cello Concerto No. 2,” a work from his middle period composed in 1982. Conducted by Penderecki himself (along with Maciej Tworzek, who continued to support him as his assistant), these two cello concertos feature a stellar lineup of soloists. In the “Cello Sonata,” Danjuro Ishizaka—who rose from first-prize winner at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich to become one of the world’s leading cellists—takes the stage, while in the “Cello Concerto No. 2,” Maya Bogdanović, a talented cellist from Belgrade who graduated with first prize from the Paris Conservatoire and was invited to perform at Penderecki’s 80th-birthday 85th birthday gala concerts, performed the solo parts—her performances are definitely worth watching!
