The opera was composed between 1901 and 1902, the last years of Rimsky-Korsakov's career, and premiered in the same year. Later revised in 1906, "The Phoenix Kashchei," subtitled "An Autumn Fairy Tale," is an opera in one act based on the same folk song as Stravinsky's "The Firebird.
