Etsuko Hirose, who won the first prize at the 1999 Martha Argerich International Piano Competition, is a talented young lady based in Paris, France. Following "Moszkowski: Piano Works" (PDACOCD866/DACOCD866), which unearthed the hidden gems of Polish Romanticism, the second release from Danacord (Denmark) is a solo piano version of "Scheherazade" arranged by Hirose herself! Rimsky=Korsakov, who was attracted to the exotic world of the Arabs and Orient, depicted the world of "One Thousand and One Nights (Arabian Nights)," which was popular in Russia at that time, and his symphonic suite "Scheherazade" continues to be highly popular even today. Etsuko Hirose has arranged this masterpiece, which she herself is fascinated by, as pianistically and faithfully as possible to the atmosphere and effects of the original.Also included in the coupling is a rare piece, "One Thousand and One Nights," by Nikolai Bortkiewicz (Bortkiewicz), a composer from the Russian Empire of Kharkiv (now Ukraine) who suffered hardships as a result of two world wars. As the title suggests, this suite of 10 character pieces was written on the theme of "Arabian Nights," and was published in 1927.
