Description:
Danish organist Finn Wiesau (1906-1987) was born in Houlevia, Nestvez, Chelan. He entered the music school in Sørloo, where he studied organ with Mogens Verdike, a well-known conductor, piano with Alexander Stoflein, and music theory with Jens Peter Larsen, a scholar of Baroque music and Haydn. A graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the University of Copenhagen, he became organist at the Reformed Church in Copenhagen in 1928 and served as organist at the churches of Jägersborg, Trinity, and St. Andreas. Vissau is known abroad for his recordings of classical organ works, and has been invited as a visiting professor at Yale University and the University of North Texas, and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Åbo (Turku), Finland. His performances are highly regarded as the most accurate representation possible of the composer's intentions, without arbitrary interpretations and compromises, based on a deep knowledge of organ history, instrumental mechanics, registration, and musical style. This series of four albums is a "retrospective" of Wiesau's music. The main program of the first collection is a complete performance of J.S. Bach's "Orgelbüchlein (Organ Pieces)". With its precise rhythms, articulations, and legato technique, it is said to have changed the way Bach was played not only in Denmark, but also in Europe and the United States. The recording was made by Marcussen&Son in 1942 at the Sørreø Church on the island of Sjælland, where a 37-stop organ was installed. The HMV recording of "Toccata and Fugue in D minor," which inspired the planning of this recording, is included in the "Bonus track. The series consists of original stereo recordings, except for the Bonus track, made in the 1950s by Metronome Records' recording engineer, one of the first to use stereo recording in Denmark, and later Erato's chief engineer, Peter Villemoes. Two Telefunken Neumann M49 microphones were used to capture the transparent sound image that Wiesau wanted. The reissue was done by Klaus Beurit.Using original tape recordings and Vinyl LPs, including unused discs with transcription and other problems, the early 1950s recordings by Villemoes have also been restored to the best possible sound for the timeless enjoyment of Wiesau's art.
