Vidor, the Organ Maestro! The World of His Little-Known Piano Works! British pianist Daniel Grimwood (b. 1976) was invited to perform at the opening concert of the 34th “Fuzum Castle Music Festival,” where he recorded piano works by the Schumanns and Liszt (DACOCD986) for the Danacord label. For his second solo release on Danacord, he presents the piano works of the French composer Vidor. Charles-Marie Vidor was born in Lyon in 1844. He received his first organ lessons from his father, an organ builder, and went to study in Brussels through the family friend Cavaille-Coll. Upon his return, he was appointed assistant to Saint-Saëns at the Madeleine Church. He served for many years as organist at the Church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. As a composer, he left behind a wide-ranging body of work, including ten organ symphonies, as well as orchestral works, chamber music, piano pieces, songs, and music for opera and ballet. This album features five rarely recorded piano works by Vidor. “Variations on an Original Theme” is a revised version of the 1867 “Concert Variations on an Original Theme” (Op. 1). It consists of seven sections: the “Andantino” theme, four variations, a short “Vivace,” and “Tempo primo-Vivace.” *Carnival* is a collection of 12 short pieces depicting characters and dances. It includes the highly virtuosic “Masquerade,” “Francesca” with its “flickering, melancholic resignation,” the brisk “Entrance of the Turk,” and the heavy-footed “Hungarian Woman.” This work was dedicated to the wife of music publisher Auguste Durand. *Five Pieces* features five “Waltzes” that display a variety of moods. It also includes the *Nocturne* from the incidental music to Auguste Dourchand’s *Tale of April*, based on Shakespeare’s *Twelfth Night*. Furthermore, the album features the *Toccata*, which Vidor himself arranged for piano from a movement of his *Organ Symphony No. 5*, one of his most representative organ works. This album is dedicated to John R. Near, the author of the only biography of Vidor, whom Grimwood describes as the person “without whom I might never have encountered Vidor’s piano works.” Tokyo M Plus
