Featuring Ashkenazy, Afanasyev, and Braley! ★ A precious 50-year archive of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition, often considered one of the world’s three major competitions. The Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition was established in 1951, with its historic inaugural edition (violin division) held as the successor to the Eugène Ysaÿe Competition—named after the great Belgian violinist Ysaÿe, whose first edition took place in 1937. Following this, the piano (since 1952) and composition (since 1953) categories were established, and the vocal category was added in 1988. One category is held each year, with each category taking place every four years. In commemoration of the 75th anniversary in 2012, a 5-disc set featuring concerto performances by past top prize winners in the piano division is being released. This set allows listeners to savor the precious performances from the early days of these currently active, leading musicians, while experiencing the unique tension and excitement of the competition. The booklet features fascinating content, including photographs of Afanasyev, Braley, Ashkenazy, and others from their younger days when they won the competition, as well as messages from several of the performers. ★Afanasyev’s fiery 1972 performance of Tchaikovsky is simply breathtaking. Ashkenazy, the 1956 winner, also leaves a strong impression with his Liszt performance—rather than playing it with flashy bravura, he plays each passage as if cherishing it. Nikolsky, the 1987 winner, was a rising star who had studied under Neuhaus, Naumov, and Leifgren, but tragically died in a car accident in 1995 while in his mid-30s. His interpretation of Rachmaninoff—with its rich tone, exquisitely delicate dynamics, and overflowing poetic sensibility—leaves one wondering just what a magnificent performer he might have become had he lived to this day.
