Jansons and the Concertgebouw Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10, painted with the same exquisite beauty as their celebrated "Leningrad" RCO Live presents Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 with Mariss Jansons conducting the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (RCO), of which he was Chief Conductor. [Recorded during a period of intensive engagement with the work] Live recordings from the subscription concerts given at the Concertgebouw on 29 January and 1 and 4 February 2009. Jansons and the RCO returned to the Tenth throughout the 2008/09 season, performing it at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels on 30 January, the Stadtcasino in Basel on 9 February and the Musikverein in Vienna on 10 February. After a further Concertgebouw performance on 22 August, they took the work with great success to the Großes Festspielhaus in Salzburg on 29 August, the Royal Albert Hall on 1 September, the concert hall of the Culture and Convention Centre in Lucerne on 4 September, the Berlin Philharmonie on 5 September and the Alte Oper in Frankfurt on 8 September. This was the fifth season of Jansons's tenure as Chief Conductor, a time when his partnership with the orchestra was deepening; immediately after these sessions, on 5 and 6 February, the same forces gave the highly praised performances of Dvořák's Requiem (RCO.10001). [Shostakovich symphonies, a Jansons speciality] Along with Tchaikovsky, this is the repertoire to which Jansons devoted the greatest energy. His complete cycle, finished in 2005, included a studio recording of the Tenth made with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1994, so this is his second account of the work, fifteen years later. [Shostakovich symphonies on record with the RCO] It was Principal Guest Conductor Kirill Kondrashin and fifth Chief Conductor Bernard Haitink who established these symphonies as core RCO repertoire in the late 1970s. Kondrashin recorded No. 6 live with the orchestra in 1968, No. 4 in 1971 and No. 9 in 1980. Haitink recorded seven of them - Nos. 5, 6, 8 and 11 to 14 - for his complete cycle, and added a live No. 15 in March 2010. The RCO had previously recorded the Tenth live under Haitink in 1985 and in the studio under Claus Peter Flor in 1990, making this the orchestra's third recording of the work and its first in nineteen years.
